2022-23 Phi Mu Foundation Annual Report

A Message From Our Leadership

Dear Sisters and Friends,

Love. Honor. Truth. These three words have bound thousands of women together for generations while serving as the anchor that keeps us steady amongst the headwinds.

Since Phi Mu Foundation’s founding in 1957, we have worked fearlessly to support Phi Mu members in their greatest time of need, threading the values of love, honor and truth through every grant awarded. While we’ve celebrated many famed fundraising accomplishments in the last 66 years, we’ve also faced a myriad of challenges. But in the face of adversity – then and now – Phi Mu Foundation’s commitment to our members has never wavered.

It has been your devotion to supporting our sisterhood during these times that has helped us continue our mission.

The needs of our members are greater than ever before with three times more women applying for academic scholarships than we have funds available and constant waves of applications from sisters seeking emergency assistance due to natural disasters, medical events or other life-altering circumstances. With your partnership, we’re investing in Phi Mu women to reach their highest potential and serve their campuses and communities with the kind of pride that only the Phi Mu experience can instill.

Phi Mu women and their needs will always be at the forefront of the Foundation’s mission because this is a sisterhood of love, guided by honor and sealed in truth. Thank you for your commitment to honoring our values and investing in the lifetime development of Phi Mu women.

Love in Our Bond,

Janeen Judah (Texas A&M)

Investing in Phi Mu Women for a Lifetime

Originally established as a literary organization, Phi Mu has rooted itself in leadership and education since 1852. By continuing to support our members with funding to Phi Mu Fraternity’s innovative leadership and educational programs, chapter educational projects funded through chapter library funds, and other leading philanthropic endeavors, we are investing in Phi Mu women and the member experience for a lifetime.

Providing New Opportunities for Members Through Academic Scholarships

The cost of education continues to rise across the country and Phi Mu members are often faced with challenges when it comes to affordability. Through the Foundation’s various scholarship funds, we’re able to offer financial support to our collegiate and alumnae members who are pursuing a higher education.

Meet Agustina Fainguersch (Purdue)

“Not only does a scholarship ease some of the financial burdens that come with a medical education, but it is also a constant reminder of the impact that supportive and generous individuals can make on the lives of others. This is an attitude that I hope to pass on to those around me in my journey to become a physician.”

The Foundation awarded 134 Phi Mu women with $186,500 in academic scholarships in 2022-23 to pursue their undergraduate and graduate-level education.

Investing in Historic Preservation

As the second-oldest Greek organization for women, we are proud to preserve Phi Mu relics of the past and present in order to tell the story of more than 170 years of Phi Mu. We are currently in the process of relocating relics from the Cannonball House in Macon to the Heritage Museum at Phi Mu National Headquarters in Peachtree City, Georgia. The transfer of our full collection of archives to the Heritage Museum will be completed by the end of 2023.

The Foundation invested $5,500 in 2022-23 in these historic preservation projects:

$5,000
in rent and insurance for the Philomathean Room at the Cannonball House in Macon, Georgia
$500
in American Association for State and Local History membership dues

Providing Emergency Assistance to Sisters in their Greatest Time of Need

Through our Member Assistance Funds – the Leona Hughes Hughes Heart and Hand Fund and the Betty Nell Wilkinson Emergency Fund – we’re able to provide members with financial support to help with tuition and education expenses, along with basic necessities of food, clothing, shelter, transportation, utilities, and/or medical care.

Meet Leilah Talon (Cal State Northridge)

“In the Summer of 2022, I was personally asked by the director of a professional opera company in Europe to perform two main roles while also receiving a scholarship to help fund some of the cost of tuition for the trip in their upcoming summer section. As I accepted the offer, on day one of the trip I got into a serious accident during a layover in Munich, Germany, that led me to the hospital. I received emergency surgery that resulted in 7 days in the hospital alone in Munich, with a full plate and four screws in my ankle. I had to resign from the program on the first day but had to find a way back home since my round trip got fully canceled with no refund or credit. Receiving this member assistance grant from Phi Mu Foundation has made me feel safe, relieved, and just so thankful that I can always count on my second family when I need the most support. I was able to pay off most of my medical debt without feeling stressed or the need to drop out of school to prioritize work over my education. I will always be forever thankful to receive this help.”

In 2022-23, the Foundation provided emergency financial assistance to five women totaling $9,389.50.

2023-26 Phi Mu Foundation Strategic Plan

Earlier this year, we launched the Foundation’s 2023-26 Strategic Plan, led by a new vision statement to guide our work: Every Phi Mu supported and empowered through a lifetime of giving and a shared commitment to love, honor and truth. This Strategic Plan highlights our ongoing commitment to investing in the lifetime development of women and supporting the Fraternity’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging efforts.
