Meet Member Assistance Grant Recipient Marie Tornyenu, Phi Xi

“I have Sickle Cell Anemia, which is a blood disorder that causes such intense pain, typically in my bones. (Several medical institutions rate it some of the worst pain on earth, right next to childbirth). Ever since I was born it’s been a struggle and more recently, I’ve been trying to undergo a clinical trial. It’s a stem cell transplant and I’ll have to do things like chemotherapy and exchange transfusions all while I’m in school. Because I had to make so many appointments in Philadelphia, I had to move out of my campus housing, a dorm that I loved. Phi Mu has been a place where people support me no matter what and help me grow and prosper and to know that I have even alumnae backing me up as I’m going through such a hard time in my life is really truly awe-inspiring.”
