An Interview with Foundation Donor and Volunteer Lisa Primiani

We sat down to chat with Rose & White Giving Program Member Lisa Primiani, Alpha Epsilon, about her Phi Mu experience and what makes giving back to Phi Mu Foundation so important to her.

How has your Phi Mu journey from collegiate membership to alumnae membership impacted the woman that you are today?

The women I’ve met as an alumna are just as important to me as the women I met as a collegian. They are women who have answered the phone when I was new in town, have helped me in my career, and have always been my support system. Phi Mu and my relationships that I’ve created through Phi Mu are the one thing that’s remained constant during so much change that I’ve gone through since college.

What has inspired you to give back to Phi Mu Foundation, especially being a member of a giving program?

Knowing that I can make even a small contribution to an organization that gave me so much means so much to me. As a past Chapter Consultant, scholarship recipient and Graduate Counselor, I love knowing that I am giving back to an organization that gave so much to me (and that’s not even including all of my closest friends!)

What led you to pursue a career in the nonprofit sector and how has it shaped your outlook on giving back to organizations that are important to you?

I got my start in the non-profit world in 2010 as a Chapter Consultant. I loved my experience as a Consultant and loved working for a truly mission-driven organization. In the non-profit world, every decision you make is driven by a mission to impact our world. Once I started working in a non-profit, where success means influencing positive change, I knew I would never be able to work for a non-mission-driven organization again.

Our non-profits need our support more than ever. They provide critical resources to so many people on a regular basis. But now, in a time of need, non-profits are still able to be nimble and provide critical services (especially when other systems are shut down or overworked). It’s donor support that keeps the Foundation’s mission thriving – which is why it’s so important to support now.

If you can give one piece of advice to a sister who is considering making a contribution to the Foundation, what would that be?

Now is the time! This is an organization for Phi Mus, supported by Phi Mus, and directly benefits Phi Mus. We are all in this together, and we will get through this together.

Meet Heart & Hand Fund Recipient Hannah Delgado, Alpha Lambda

At a time of such uncertainty, the support of Phi Mu, its members, and those who care for my family and me helped to make a lasting impact.

My family lost our home and belongings to an F3 tornado in Louisiana on December 16, 2019.

Throughout the second semester of my Chapter Consultant year, I was able to share our story and how Phi Mu Foundation and its donors have such a positive role with collegiate members. We are so grateful for the grant that helped to replenish some of the most basic items and mark the beginning of our rebuilding process.

This moment was so much more than a grant; it solidified the values and kindness of so many women that are near and dear to my heart.

Meet Danielle “Dani” Driscoll Andre, Zeta Iota

“After my family lost everything due to a serious flood in Grand Forks, ND, I wasn’t sure if I was going to find the money or the strength to finish up my last year of college. I knew I couldn’t ask my parents for money for school or Phi Mu when they were trying to rebuild their lives. But someone (I’m still not sure who) found it in their heart to nominate me for a grant from the Phi Mu Foundation Heart and Hand Fund, which helped pay for books and tuition for the fall semester.  That money gave me the strength to finish college on time, and I give to Phi Mu Foundation each year in honor of what they did for me.”

One of the most significant ways we are able to lend a helping hand to sisters is through the Leona Hughes Hughes Heart and Hand Fund and the Betty Wilkinson Emergency Fund. When you make a contribution to these funds, we are able to help women just like Danielle who have faced tragic and life-altering situations due to natural disasters, medical emergencies, or other unique circumstances. In a Moment’s Notice, Everything Had Changed

For Karly Mizell, Alpha Epsilon, she had spent months dreaming about the exciting adventures she’d have during her first year after graduation from Florida State University. Ready to take on the real world, she landed a job with Young Life, a faith-based organization that she had been involved with for several years as a youth, and was thrilled for the opportunity to work and live at Young Life’s Frontier Ranch Camp in Buena Vista, Colorado.

Only after being in Colorado for a few short months, Karly lived through something she never expected – a fire that broke out in the Frontier Ranch Camp cabin that she shared with other Young Life employees. The fire started in the cabin’s chimney and Karly and her roommates had only minutes to grab what they could from their bedrooms and run out the front door. Everyone was able to escape without injury, but the personal belongings that they left behind were gone.

“Unfortunately, everything I owned inside the cabin was burned beyond recognition from the fire. All of my clothes, shoes, toiletries – everything was gone in just a moment’s notice, “said Karly. “All of a sudden, I was faced with having to find a place to stay and replacing everything I owned, while being thousands of miles from my family.”

Karly had heard of the Phi Mu Foundation Member Assistance Funds through her collegiate days and from her mother, Lori Desguin Mizell, Alpha Epsilon. Lori is a member of the Foundation’s Legacy League Giving Program and a longtime Phi Mu Fraternity volunteer and she knew that these funds existed for members who were facing difficult times.

“I had the opportunity to meet Leona Hughes Hughes, Delta, at Phi Mu National Convention, and I thought of her and the Heart and Hand Fund when we heard that it could be months before Young Life would be able to provide the employees any assistance,” said Lori. “To know that Karly would benefit from Leona’s generosity through the Foundation gave me and my family such peace during a really troubling time.”

The Leona Hughes Hughes Heart and Hand Fund is available for collegiate and alumnae members like Karly, who are facing emergency situations such as natural disasters, critical medical illnesses and other dire circumstances. The Foundation was able to send Karly a grant from the Leona Hughes Hughes Heart and Hand Fund to help her replace some of her belongings and work toward a fresh start following the fire.

“I will forever be thankful to Phi Mu Foundation and Leona Hughes Hughes for giving me the help I needed to rebuild some of my life after so much was lost in the fire,” said Karly. “Receiving this grant made me realize how impactful every single gift is to the Foundation and how amazing it is to know that sisters who don’t even know you are willing to give in your time of need.”
